Soul On 10 This set of mixtapes couldn't be more relevant today. They're all good, featuring instrumental hip hop beats interlaced with historical sound clips from the 20th century African diaspora. There's a lot of J Dilla in these beats. The tapes have themes like the Black Panthers, Blacks in the military, and so on. Overall, the vibe is chill but quietly defiant. I shake my head when I hear the stories of injustices decades ago that are still happening today. Favorite track: All Power To The People.

about

In 2005 I started a series of mixtapes with the goal of capturing significant Black historical movements and events. With a backdrop of hip-hop beats and grooves, I spent weeks searching for what I felt were soundbites that when pieced together could tell a story. The idea was to have some kind of history book on wax, some form of a time capsule I could pass onto the next generation, my kids. So from “It’s Right To Be Civil” to “Invisible Soldier” I set out to create a history lesson that wasn’t taught in schools or were not widely known within the community and at times I felt these key events were intentionally suppressed. Here we are in 2020 and it feels more relevant than ever to share black historical stories and pass on the information, hope it inspires you to dig deeper. For one day only, all six mixtapes will be available (pay what you want) or for free, presented in a mixtape style continuous audio, the six part set.
